Management Success! Joins Forces with Body Best of Sonoma and Hawley’s Paint to Tackle Collision Shop Profitability Problems
SANTA ROSA, CA - February 27, 2014 - On Wednesday, February
19 from 9 AM to 3 PM at the Windsor Gold Club in Santa Rosa, Management
Success!, the United States’ premier auto industry consulting firm, helped
present a collision shop efficiency class along with Management Success! client
Body Best of Sonoma and Hawley’s Paint Store. The class was delivered by
Management Success!’ Senior Instructor, Jim Saeli, and Public Relations
Representative, Athena Severi. Fifteen collision shops attended, in addition to
members of the California Autobody Association (CAA), which Management Success!
sponsors.
Dino DiGiulio, owner of Body Best of Sonoma, hosted the event. As a collision shop owner, DiGiulio knew that many collision shops struggled with profitability problems. So he contacted paint supplier, Hawley’s Paint, and Management Success! to create the training session.
Hawley’s Paint has been serving the community since 1906 and was happy to jump at the chance to help its customers. “When our customers do better, we do better. That is why we sponsor training like the one we did on Efficiency with Management Success,” said Tom Gamber, general manager of Hawley’s Paint.
As part of Management Success!’ HOST (Helping Others’ Succeed Today) program, in which clients help other shops in the industry succeed with Management Success! training and consulting, DiGiulio wanted to bring quality management training to collision shops in Northern California. “I put this class together to help shop owners and managers live a better life. I knew Management Success! was the company I could trust to put on a one-day class that would be very powerful and helpful in many ways,” DiGiulio said.
Always willing to support clients who want to help others in the industry have less stressful businesses and become successful, Management Success! was glad to help.
“Part of our commitment to our HOST members is to assist them in any way possible with training, talks, or webinars on the subject of management,” said Robert Spitz, Senior Vice President of Business Development.
The class focus was how to improve profitability by getting standard procedures in place. Topics covered included how to work as a team and how to set up standard operating procedures to control cycle times.
What made the class truly enlightening for attendees was that the material was not only informative, but also tangible and applicable to the situations many shop owners were experiencing in their shops.
“I have been in business 30 years and I can see that I needed this. I needed to see where I can improve and not stick to the same routine,” Ken Lazzini of Lazzini’s Auto body affirmed. “I am excited to go and implement the data with my staff. I have a fresh outlook on my business.”

Why You Need Management Training By Bob Spitz Management Success!

| Bob Spitz Snr VP Business Dev Management Success |
What Does Management Mean?
First off let’s clarify what is meant by Management Training. The dictionary definition of manage is: organize; regulate; be in charge of something. A good technician needs to be able to organize and regulate their tools, equipment, time, and work space in order to successfully get the job of servicing and repairing vehicles done. This ability is different from the ability to actually perform the repair or service, but no less important.
Technicians go to school for years and continue their technical training to keep up with the ever changing modern vehicle. The management skills needed to be a professional technician is fairly easy to learn and does not take a long time. But these skills do not translate easily to the task of managing a business. Yet it is only these management skills that most owners are relying on to manage their businesses.
Managing employees, finances, customers, flow lines, advertising takes a much higher level of education in order to be successful as a business person. To have a successful business, business management skills are needed.
Goals and Planning
Before anything can be managed there has to be an overall plan of attack. Planning a business requires having a know goal or objective that is trying to be achieved. What is the purpose of the business? Where does the owner want the business to go?
Once this is known then planning can occur. There are three basic areas that require planning: Organization, Finance and Marketing. By far organization planning is the most complicated as this involves the proper use of space and employees.
Employees
To be successful a true team needs to be developed yet employee management is one of the trickiest areas. Knowing how to recruit and hire good people, how to compensate them correctly, train them to do their jobs and when they don’t how to correct, discipline and motive them? There is a tremendous amount an owner needs to learn about people.
Organization
In order to get the most out of the employees in a business the business has got to be organized. But what does that really mean. Organizing is the act of lining things up in a logical sequence so that at the end we have something done, and done in a smooth and efficient manner. Twenty-five percent of an owners day needs to be spent on this process and this includes training. To get the maximum production out of an area the people in the area must be trained in the jobs they are doing.
Finances
Financial planning is more than having an accountant that can be trusted. Financial planning requires that the owner of the business knows how to set up the finance area of the business in order to get accurate information quickly, know what the numbers mean and then steer the business into good financial condition. That means the owner has to know how to read the reports, control expenses, create solvency and invest wisely. An owner of an auto service facility needs to have the same level of training and skill in this area as in any area of the business. It can not be left to someone else to do.
Marketing
There are many theories and opinions regarding marketing and advertising an automotive service facility. What works in one part of the country does not mean it will work in another. In fact, you can have a successful campaign in one part of a town, and have it do nothing in another part of the same town! Understanding the principals behind why this is is critical for any business owner to understand. The people in our industry tend to copy what someone else is doing without any knowledge as to what works and what doesn’t. It gets to be a bad case of the blind-leading-the-blind. Advertising is not cheap, and an owner needs to know what will and will not work in his or her market.
Marketing planning has to be thought through completely with true information at hand, and it needs to be done well out into the future. The success of any business relies on knowing and having the knowledge of marketing basics.
I have touch on three key elements in this article. They are by no means the only areas that an owner has to be skilled in handling. So when we look at the modern day automotive facility and the emotional and financial investment most people make in their businesses it becomes clear that knowing how to diagnose and repair vehicles, although important, is not where the money is for the owner. Is Your Front Working For You or Against You? - by Lisa Shomo, Management Success!
We spoke with three different shop owners to find out the troubles they were having in the front of their shop before they attended the How to Increase Your Profits seminar. Here’s what they told us:
Q: How was the front of your shop doing with sales and customer service before the How to Increase Your Profits seminar?
Mark Probst - Probst Auto Body
Deterich, IL:
Before I went to the seminar, our front office consisted of just me and my sister who had started with me part-time. She was doing some bookkeeping, paying bills, answering phones, and basically greeting customers.
I was doing everything else, including writing estimates. I thought the key to making the front work was simply treating everyone nice. I thought it was working for us. I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong.
Then, when I went to the seminar, I realized there were a lot of things that I wasn’t doing in the front. And I was losing sales left and right.
When I handled the estimates at the front counter, this is how it would go: a customer would walk in and ask for an estimate. I would write the estimate and give it to the customer and that was the end of my sale. The extent of my closing was that I would hope they would get their car fixed with us! I wasn’t aggressive with my closing. There wasn’t a whole lot of communication between me and the customers; I didn’t know what they really wanted. I would write the estimate and would hope they wanted me to fix it. That was my sale!
What I realized at the seminar is that we had no real system in place to handle customers and sell to customers at the front. I hadn’t even really trained my sister and just let her figure things out by herself. We handled stuff as it came at us and flew by the seat of our pants. Actually, we were constantly “putting out fires.”
I realized I wasn’t really being a salesperson at all. I needed to close the job and if it didn’t close, I needed to follow up with them the next day and really communicate with the customer.
Now, the front is doing awesome! We have a full system in place in the front to handle customers from the beginning of the estimate to the end. We’re closing anywhere from 80-90% of our estimates that we write! Going to the seminar really turned it around for my shop.
Steve Hixson - Art’s Automotive
Longview, WA:
In my case, before the seminar, we actually had a pretty fair sales group up front. We’ve got very large shops and we’ve been around a long time. However, at that point I couldn’t do better than I was doing. I was simply out of ideas on how to get to the next level.
The biggest thing I got from the seminar was learning about statistics. That was the first time I ever came across anything like that. I learned how to get all my weekly shop numbers down on paper and how to map them out over a period of time to really see the trends in the statistics for the shop. Then I actually had the ability to do something about the amount of sales I was getting in the front. I could come up with ideas and solutions on how to make those stats go up, and of course that’s what we’re all trying to do.
Six months after the seminar, it was like night and day. We actually were able to put in a plan to improve the statistics. Everyone in the front had their own task list to get done to achieve this. Because we now tracked the stats each week, we knew right away the things that were working and the things that weren’t. We kept what worked and got rid of what didn’t work!
Our close rate now is nearly 100%. Very rarely do we get an estimate that is not sold. After the seminar we knew how to improve the front and close more sales, schedule appointments, and get the workflow really going!
Dave Bloom - Pine Aire Truck Svc
Bay Shore, NY:
Before the How to Increase Your Profits seminar, I did most of the sales myself, and closing the sales wasn’t really a problem for me. But while I was up there making and closing those sales, I was losing other opportunities to move the business forward and expand. So, what the seminar made me see is that there are other people that are capable of closing sales the way that I was able to close sales. With the proper training, you can have another person do it which will allows you to be the owner, which makes the business move in the direction that’s more profitable for you. That’s the most important thing that I learned.
I found I was missing out on actually running my business. If you’re working in the business as a service writer, but you’re not running your business the way an owner should be running a business, you’re severely limiting the amount of growth that you’re capable of having in your shop.
The seminar showed me what holes I had in my business and where my inefficiencies were. I realized I wasn’t capable of being an owner and a service writer at the same time really well. Obviously, you can do customer service and service writing, but in order to make your company grow to where you want it to be, you have to hire the right person and properly train them to do that job up in the front for you.
And that’s where the Management Success! seminar comes in. These are the tools you can learn and use to expand your business like I did!
